INT48International/Aviation/BusinessRussia mulls deal with Iran to export helicoptersMoscow, Oct 3 RIA Novosti Kamov, one of Russia's largest helicopter producers, Friday said it was in talks with Iranian officials for a deal to export Ka-226T utility helicopters to the Islamic country. The agreement with Iran is expected to be signed by the end of this year, Roman Chernyshev, director of Kamov, said, adding that the agreement would be for "supplying civil rather than military helicopters".Chernyshev also said that other Russian aircraft makers had already signed similar deals with Iran, in particular, for the delivery of more than 100 Tu-204 medium-haul passenger aircraft. He said Kamov had received a 2.5-billion ruble $100 million loan from Vnesheconombank, or the Bank for Development and Foreign Economic Affairs of Russia, to produce the Ka-226T utility helicopters. The Ka-226T can carry either eight people or 1.5 tonnes of cargo and has a variety of modifications - passenger, freight, search and rescue, and patrol. --RIA Novostiskp/jg170 Words03101854

  • Kolkata power utility to hike charges in 2008-09

BUS23Business/EnergyKolkata power utility to hike charges in 2008-09Kolkata, Oct 1 IANS Private power utility CESC Ltd has been allowed to charge an average tariff of Rs.3.91 per unit of power for 2008-09 against Rs.3.86 per unit last fiscal, the West Bengal Electricity Regulatory Commission said in its order Wednesday. The approved tariff of Rs.3.91 is lower than Rs.4.13 demanded by the RPG Group-owned CESC in its petition for tariff revision. CESC supplies power to Kolkata. In the current fiscal, the gross revenue of CESC from power generation and distribution would be Rs.28.04 billion based on the new tariff against Rs.29.05 billion projected by the company based on its per unit tariff petition, an official of the state regulator said. The state regulatory commission has also kept aside Rs.10 million from CESC's projected revenue for 2008-09 for lack of proper safety audit."For non-compliance of conducting safety audit in time, some revenue has been withheld from recovery by CESC," a statement issued by the regulator said. The regulator has assumed an inflation rate of 7.5 percent while considering CESC's petition demanding approval of hikes in various input costs, the official said. All categories of consumers of CESC would now be required to pay a fixed charge per KVA Kilo Volt Ampere ranging from Rs.2.50 a month to Rs.15 a month."The fixed charges are computed on the basis of the infrastructure cost incurred by the power companies in bringing power to the consumer and from now every consumer should bear this cost," the official said.--Indo-Asian News Serviceag/sj/vt285 Words01101936

  • Mumbai, Sep 30 IANS Sourav Ganguly's international career appears more or less over, unless the newly-appointed national selectors take a different view from that of their predecessors when they meet Wednesday to pick the squad for the first two Tests against Australia.

SPO13SportsNew national selectors have to take the call on GangulyMumbai, Sep 30 IANS Sourav Ganguly's international career appears more or less over, unless the newly-appointed national selectors take a different view from that of their predecessors when they meet Wednesday to pick the squad for the first two Tests against Australia.Chief selector Krisnamachari Srikkanth and his colleagues could not bargained for a tougher start for a starter to their term as they have to sit in judgment on the utility of India's most successful captain to the side. Dilip Vengsarkar, who made way for Srikkanth, thought it was time to introduce fresh legs. He wanted to sound a warning to other seniors cricketers that their time too was coming to an end by dropping Ganguly from the Rest of India side for the Iran Trophy as a prelude. Ganguly's omission fuelled speculation and some predicted that he would quit the game if he is dropped from the first Test side, starting in Bangalore Oct 9, even though he gave himself another two years of big-time cricket. He wanted to prove his form by playing the Punjab inter-club league as the rains had kept him off field in Kolkata.Gautam Gambhir and Virender Sehwag should retain their places not only in the squad but also in the eleven after their good showing on the Sri Lanka tour. Rahul Dravid, Sachin Tendulkar and V.V.S Laxman will be keyed up to do well, more so the first two who had a none-too-happy tour of Sri Lanka. Mohammad Kaif, who had a tremendous run in the domestic cricket last year, has a strong chance of being included in the squad to fill in a middle-order slot. Rohit Sharma is another batsman who is talked about as a possible inclusion but he has to be a lot more consistent to force his way into the Test line-up.Skipper Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh will be the mainline spinners and left-arm Pragyan Ojha or leg-spinner Piyush Chawla could be the back-up bowler. Vice-captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni should be fresh after the break he had from the Sri Lanka tour. Zaheer Khan should lead the pace attack with fast-improving Ishant Sharma and the rejuvenated Munaf Patel joining him. Ashok Dinda's name might come up for discussion along with Rudra Pratap Singh. The other members of the new selection are: Yashpal Sharma North, Narendra Hirwani Central, Raja Venkat East and Surendra Bhave West.--Indo-Asian News Serviceav/vs435 Words30091901

  • Dubai commits $19.6 bn to utility projects

ECO2Economy/InternationalDubai commits $19.6 bn to utility projectsDubai, Sep 29 IANS This West Asian metropolis has committed 72 billion dirhams $19.6 billion to fund its utility projects being implemented this year and which are under construction. The investments are in line with directives from Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates UAE Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum in the face of soaring demand for electricity and water, the state-run Emirates News Agency WAM reported.Saeed Mohamed Al Tayer, managing director and chief executive officer of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority DEWA, said the budget would enable DEWA to implement some of its biggest projects. According to him, Dubai has been able to meet the world’s highest demand growth rates in electricity and water - at 15 percent and 12 percent respectively - in recent years. And this, Al Tayer said, would increase further due to the emirate’s ambitious projects.By the end of 2007, the population of Dubai was 1.478 million, second only to Abu Dhabi 1.493 million in the UAE.According to recent figures released by the UAE’s Ministry of Economy, this is bound to change in the future with forecasts showing Dubai’s population increasing to 1.722 million by the end of 2009, while Abu Dhabi will go to second position with its population at 1.62 million.Al-Tayer said DEWA has developed rationalisation plans and launched awareness campaigns, which were successful in preserving resources.--Indo-Asian News Serviceab/ank/dg259 Words29091541
